Did you know that fish can be delicious when it’s grilled?

In this article, I'm going to show you some great tips for grilling fish. Even if you usually shy away from cooking fish because of how it smells and tastes, grilled fish is definitely worth a try!

So read on to learn more about how to grill fish and some tips to help grill your best fish yet!

What is the best type of fish to grill?

The best type of fish to grill is probably any type that you like to eat raw as sushi (like salmon, tuna, or trout).

Getting these fish perfectly grilled can be slightly challenging, so it may not be the best choice for a newbie. If you’re more confident, you can also try grilling other white fish like tilapia, cod, or snapper.

Any type of fish can also be smoked and then grilled, which provides an amazing flavor twist!

How long does grilling take?

Most fish can be grilled for less than 5 minutes per side, but this depends on the thickness of the fish. Extra-thick fish like salmon and tuna can take 5 minutes or more per side, while thinner fish like tilapia can take less than 2 minutes per side.

For a more consistent result, it’s a good idea to start checking your fish at the recommended grill time and then check it every 30 seconds until it’s done.

Grilling times can vary depending on the size of the grill. The bigger the grill, the fewer the number of minutes it needs to get hot enough to grill your food.

Generally, gas grills need to be hotter than charcoal grills to maintain a constant temperature, so keep this in mind when calculating how long to grill your food.

Planking and grilling

Planking is when you build a “bridge” of seaweed, herbs, or other flavoring agents over the grill grates. This ensures that you get a nice smokey flavor on your fish when you grill it.

If you don’t want to build the bridge yourself, you can also buy plank-style grilling mats that you place over the grill. You can plank your fish ahead of time, or you can plank it while it’s on the grill.

Planking while you grill also lets you quickly move the plank between the grill and the table so that you can add or remove ingredients while it’s still on the grill.

Cooking tips for fish on the grill

  • Fish will be done when it’s no longer translucent, and it’s flaky instead of mushy.
  • Keep the fish off the edges of the grill to prevent burning.
  • Use a basting brush to baste your fish with a light citrus or herb sauce while it’s on the grill.
  • Clean up after grilling with a clean dish towel, as fish grease and residual food will stain your grill grates.
